Captain Morgan has been doing a really impressive job with their new Cannon Blast line. With summer on the way, their next on the line is Captain Morgan LocoNut. It’s described as “Carribean Rum Coconut Liqueur, Spice and Natural Flavor”. I had sampled the Jack O’Blast Pumpkin Rum and enjoyed it. They offered to send us a bottle to sample for our review.

Packaging ultimately has nothing to do with the taste of the product, but I do need to mention it. When it arrived, I immediately noticed that there was a strong coconut scent coming from the box. I worried that it had been damaged in transit. I took the coconut shaped bottle out and inspected it. No signs of damage or leaks. It’s then that I noticed the broken coconut design of the bottle, which enabled you to see the liquid inside. It’s also when I noticed coconut smell was coming from the bottle itself! This bottle is LITERALLY coconut scented! Points earned for experience Captain Morgan!

Captain Morgan LocoNut Taste

Captain Morgan suggests having it cold, so after refrigerating it, I poured myself a glass. I immediately noticed that this was not like other coconut rums. The opaque liquid is more silky, which lends itself to being more like coconut milk. That look translates to the tasting experience as well. It is SMOOTH and tastes more like a finished drink than it does coconut rum. This is the kind of thing you can pour yourself a glass and enjoy on a patio! The taste is sweet and very coconutty. If you’re someone who loves coconut water, you are going to like this. If you’re someone who likes coconut macaroons, you’re going to LOVE this.

Captain Morgan has a hit on their hands with this. I expect this to be a popular drink this summer. It’s tasty and packs in coconut flavor. At the same time, it’s also got a bit of a punch to it at 20% alcohol. If you’re gluten-free, you’ll be happy to know it’s a gluten-free beverage. Despite this being a drink on its own, it can also be used as a replacement for coconut rum.

So, is it good? Yeah, it’s damn good! Well done Captain Morgan. This is an innovative take on a classic summer rum flavor.
